dairy identification number

Every milk-processing establishment (dairy) in the EU is assigned a so-called dairy identification number (hygiene number). This unique number can be found on every dairy product and serves, among other things, to enable consumers to trace its origin.
It consists of a country code and a facility number; in Germany, each federal state also has its own letter prefix.
