Cardboard savings
through returnable transport boxes

In 2022 we launched a major packaging initiative (see below) that lets us save significant amounts of cardboard by delivering products in returnable transport boxes.
Below we list further projects that have been successfully implemented:
Together
with the ÖMA partner cheese dairy Bantel in Möggers, we have adjusted the packaging unit for the soft cheeses ÖMA Edler Weisser, ÖMA Edler Weisser Walnut, ÖMA Edler Weisser Olive, ÖMA Edler Weisser Rosé and ÖMA Torten-Brie from two pieces to one. Since then, eight soft cheese tarts have been delivered in a returnable transport box, rather than being packed in pairs in an outer carton.
Our seasonal tarts will follow in the course of the year, starting with the summer variety, ÖMA Edler Weisser Gartentraum. These will be followed by ÖMA Edler Weisser pumpkin-Kernbeißer in autumn, the winter product ÖMA Edler Weisser Pistazien-Knacker and, finally, ÖMA Edler Weisser Bunte Schote in spring.
The cardboard packaging has been eliminated for all of them, saving us around 8 tonnes of paper per year.

We also reduce plastic and paper use
in our Italian dessert range.

The packaging for our Italian desserts, Tiramisu and Mousse al Cioccolato, is delivered in an optimised form. The ‘base’ has been removed from the tub.
This reduces the weight from 8.4 g to 7.3 g and saves 12.5% plastic per tub. This results in a total annual saving of approximately 350 kg of plastic.
Thanks to the smaller paper sleeve, we save approximately 250 kg of paper annually, and a further approximately 590 kg of paper on the shipping carton.

Paper savings
through reusable transport boxes
In 2022, we launched a major initiative to transition our packaging.
Our plan is to switch products that are currently packed in so-called outer cartons for logistical reasons to returnable transport boxes. This step involves overcoming a number of logistical challenges, but above all, it means convincing all partners in our value chain of the benefits of the returnable system.
Below, we list two projects that have been successfully converted.

This step involves overcoming a number of logistical challenges, but above all, it means convincing all partners in our value chain of the benefits of the returnable system.
Below, we list two projects that have been successfully converted.

We began with ÖMA Bartholomäus GewürzBlüte, the spiced version of our semi-hard organic sliced cheese, ÖMA Bartholomäus. Until now, it was delivered individually in a cardboard outer box. Starting now, two pieces are placed in a returnable transport box, eliminating the need for the cardboard outer box and saving just under 3 metric tonnes of paper each year. It’s a win for our planet and for you.

The ÖMA Allgäuer Tilsiter followed the ÖMA Bartholomäus in the conversion project. Previously, it was wrapped in wrapping paper and delivered in a cardboard box. The wrapping paper remains to protect the cheese, but we now deliver two wheels to our customers in a returnable transport box. By eliminating the cardboard box, we save around 1.4 tonnes of paper every year.
45% reduction in plastic use for ÖMA’s Rigatino

ÖMA Rigatino – our smallest hard cheese with an Italian flavour – is now packaged much more economically than before. A change in the packaging method has enabled the amount of film used to be reduced from 22 g to 12 g, resulting in a 45% saving in film per cheese. A small but significant step.
Carrier Bag Optimisation:
Part Two

Our popular, stylish ÖMA grass-paper carrier bags have been made from 30% grass fibre and 70% recycled waste paper since 2019 (see below for 2019). We have now taken this a step further and have also reduced the paper thickness of the bag. This reduction means 20% less material is used per bag. Annually, this equates to a saving of around 100 kg of paper.
And the added benefit? A paper bag can be reused countless times. Every time our “I’m made of grass and I’m organic!” bag is reused, additional paper is saved.

Fondue Optimisation:
Part Two

Our ÖMA Allgäuer Cheese Fondue was optimised back in 2018, with a reduction of around 20% in plastic, as well as the removal of the paper flap and staples used to secure it (see below for further details). Now we’re taking it a step further:
in the new tubular pouch, we’re packing the same amount of fondue using around 43% less material compared to the old stand-up pouch. This equates to a saving of around 190 kg of plastic per year. The reduction also lets us fit more packs into each sales carton, saving additional cardboard. It’s a win on two fronts.

ÖMA Mozza saves 230kg of plastic

By reducing the brine content by 20 g per ÖMA Mozza and ÖMA Mozzarella bag, we have achieved a further optimisation of the packaging. The film height has been reduced by 5 mm from 135 mm to 130 mm. This corresponds to a 3.5% saving in plastic per bag and thus a total weight saving of around 230 kg of film per year.
The size and weight of the Mozzarella balls remain unchanged. The reduced use of brine per bag cuts the transport weight by around 46,000 litres of salt water, which also has a positive impact on transport emissions. A double reduction!

We have reduced plastic use by 64% for ÖMA’s Scamorza and Scamorzine.

With immediate effect, we are supplying ÖMA Scamorza and ÖMA Scamorzine in PA/PE thermoformed film packaging.
For ÖMA Scamorza, this unfortunately means an increase in the weight of the packaging of just under 6 g. However, this is offset by the significant material saving of around 80% in the case of ÖMA Scamorzine packaging. Overall, we are therefore saving around 64% in material for both individual packaging types, which corresponds to a total of around 124 kg of plastic.

The best organic –
better packaged!

Our ÖMA cheese slices come in new, innovative packaging. This is made from 72% paper and can be completely separated and recycled. This format cuts plastic use by around 77% compared with standard packaging and is designed for responsible disposal after use. “Best organic—better packaged!”
6 tonnes of paper saved through cardboard recycling

In our day-to-day order-picking process, the majority of our goods are loaded onto transport in returnable containers such as Ifco and mesh crates. However, for some consignments, this method of dispatch is not possible, which is why we resort to cardboard boxes. Reusing cardboard boxes has always been second nature to us, and last year we began recording the quantity of recycled boxes we use. We are delighted with the result, as last year we were able to reuse around 10,000 used cardboard boxes, thereby saving on new ones. This equates to a paper saving of just under 6 tonnes per year.
400 kg of paper saved thanks to scanner technology

Our technical equipment has been upgraded to a new level in recent months. We have introduced scanner technology for goods dispatch, which not only enables us to work more efficiently but also saves paper. In addition, our software for issuing invoices and the associated filing has been optimised – this is now carried out digitally. Taken together with the paper saved on goods-out documentation and the digital dispatch of most invoices to our customers, this saves us around 80,000 sheets of paper per year, amounting to just under 400 kg of paper per year.
Reducing plastic and optimising recycling

The outer packaging for ÖMA’s goat’s cheese rolls has been updated. Black PE trays have been replaced with white PE trays that are fully recyclable and around 20 % thinner, saving material and reducing waste.
2019
Content optimisations

Zurwieser yoghurt pots are being redesigned to reduce material use: the new shape cuts weight by around 10% and all trays are switching from aluminium to plastic-coated paper.
Grass, not wood, in the shopping bag.

Improvements have also been made in the area of cheese accessories and other packaging materials. For example, paper carrier bags have been switched to grass paper. These consist of 30% grass, which is visible in the bag’s appearance. The remaining 70% consists of recycled paper.
Goodbye to the clamshell lid

To reduce plastic use, we will no longer include a snap-on lid with our ÖMA Cottage Cheese. As a result, our grainy cream cheese will now be delivered without an additional lid.
2018
Our fondue packaging has been optimised

ÖMA’s ÖMA’s Allgäuer Cheese Fondue in a stand-up pouch is now supplied in a newly printed stand-up pouch. The amount of film used in the pouch has been reduced by around 20% and the paper flap has been removed. This represents a significant saving in packaging material. Thanks to this reduction, we are also able to pack the packaging unit into a smaller shipping box, thereby saving further material.
Packaging optimisation –
the economical pear

Our ÖMA’s Scamorza Affumicata is now supplied in improved packaging and with less packaging material. Previously, a 62 g PP tray was used for four pears; now two pears are packaged in a 6 g PET film, reducing material use by about 80 percent per pear.
Our cheese-wrap paper is recyclable and can be disposed of
with waste paper after use.

ÖMA has also added the new BioPap cheese paper to its range. This is made from 100% cellulose and can be disposed of as waste paper after use.
BioPap cheese paper is produced from the renewable raw material cellulose, which comes from certified European forests. It is grease-resistant, moisture-resistant and breathable. Foodstuffs such as cheese stay fresh for longer when wrapped in it, whilst also being able to continue maturing. As the cheese paper is made from a single material, it does not need to be separated after use and, when clean, can be recycled in the paper recycling bin or composted in the organic waste bin.

Cardboard packaging produced to the FSC standard
In collaboration with the Allgäuer-based packaging manufacturer Hans Kolb, all of our cardboard packaging is produced according to FSC standards.
For the production of corrugated board, the manufacturer uses recycled raw materials in addition to FSC-certified ones. By processing waste paper from local recycling partners, fresh raw paper is produced for innovative, sustainable packaging. In an optimised internal material cycle, trim offcuts and die-cutting waste are also fed directly back into the company’s paper production. Where recycled materials are not available, FSC-certified raw materials are used. As a result, all packaging solutions from Hans Kolb Wellpappe are FSC-certified. “We are delighted to have a partner in our long-standing packaging supplier who takes sustainability seriously,” said Philipp Thiel, Head of Marketing and Sales at ÖMA, “and that this enables us to make the packaging for our eco-friendly products even more environmentally friendly.”
